While we’re best known for making world-class spirits, our role as a spirited neighbor means investing in the foundation of the communities we call home.
We’re proud to share an exciting update for the California neighborhood. The sewer system improvements partially funded by our $250,000 grant to Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) are nearing completion. We appreciate your patience as this work has been underway and hope you’ve noticed improvements in your area.
At the start of its project, MSD inspected 925 catch basins throughout the California neighborhood. Of those, 84 were identified for replacement, and that work has been ongoing over the past 18 months. These catch basins, which capture stormwater to combine it with wastewater that then goes to MSD treatment plants, are being upgraded with modern versions designed with water traps to reduce unpleasant smells and improve performance. You may notice stickers on replaced catch basins to indicate that they are the new, trapped versions. The updates in the California neighborhood are expected to wrap up by June, which is important as odors can typically increase during warmer, dry weather when there’s reduced water flow to flush out the underground system of pipes.
This work is part of MSD’s broader investment in West Louisville, with more than $16.5 million invested in critical sewer improvements. Heaven Hill’s grant helped MSD replace more catch basins and accelerate upgrades that might have otherwise been delayed, benefiting the entire California community.
We are grateful to our partners at MSD for their leadership on this project and look forward to continuing our work in the California community.
